MATARKA (MAgyar Folyóiratok TARtalomjegyzékeinek Kereshető Adatbázisa - Hungarian Periodicals Table of Contents Database) is a database of the contents of journals issued in Hungary. It works as a library consortium managed by the University of Miskolc, Library, Archives, Museum. The database includes journal contents that can be searched in several different ways, and individual journal issues can also be browsed. Data input processing is done by manual input or by converting digital contents.
Data input
| Authors and contributors: | authors of articles, columnists, authors of reviews, introductions, compilers of review articles, etc. A maximum of 11 names is allowed, prefixes like dr., ifj., (jr., sr.) etc. must not be used. Names which are not Hungarian are entered in reverse order, e.g. Smith, Peter. (Note: In Hungarian the surname (family name) preceeds given names.) |
| Column: | title of the column. |
| Title: | title of articles or any other text. If the article is in a foreign language, then the foreign title, and possibly the Hungarian title is also given. |
| Page number: | first and last page of the article. In the case of conversion often the initial page number is given only. |
| Full text: | link pointing to the website where the full text of the article may be found (if it is available). |
| File format: | file format of the full text, e.g. HTML or PDF. |
Truncation and wildcards
Various forms of a word or term with different endings may be suitable for the search (e.g. communicable, communication, etc.). In this case the ending may be substituted by the symbols % or * after the first characters (e.g. communi% or communi*).
Wildcards are used if we want to substitute one or more characters in the middle of a word, e.g. because it may occur with a different spelling (e.g. in the case of foreign terms), or we would like to search for two different words (e.g. makro, mikro). In the MATARKA database you may substitute one or more characters (e.g. if you search for deve*pment you will retrieve hits with: development, developmental, etc.).
Long vowels or short?
It is possible to search the database without accent (diacritical) marks used in Hungarian for indicating the length of vowels. As a matter of fact, this may increase the number of hits, since we get both the long and the short forms.
Eg.:
Query term: kerék
Result: articles with the word kerék in their title
Query term: kerek
Result: articles with the wordskerek, kerék, kérek in their title
If the term contains a special character, its equivalent in the Latin alphabet should be used without any accents or diacritical marks.
Eg.: Banczerowski instead of Bańczerowski, instead siecle of siècle

There are two options in the simple search function:
1. Quick search:
A maximum of five words may be written into the query line. Words are automatically connected by AND, i.e. there is a hit only if each given term can be found in the record.
The hit set can be limited later on.
Both the authors' names and the titles of articles are searched, however, an exact match of the terms is required in both fields.
Eg.: If we are looking for articles by Conran, John the title of which includes "plant associations" we may search first for
Query term: Conran, John
Result: 1 hit among author names, 0 hit in titles, altogether 1 article
Query term: plant associations
Result: 0 hit among author names, 3 hits in titles, altogether 3 articles
Query term: Conran plant - NO RESULT!
If we want to search for article(s) by a particular author, it is worth using the following version of simple search.
2. Search:
There are four fields (query lines). It is possible to use one or more words in each line, which will automatically be connected by AND. Besides this, the four query lines are also connected by AND, i.e. the intersection of the (maximum four) hit sets will be the final result.
It is not required to use all four query lines.
Author and Further author fields: only one name should be written into the query line starting with the surname (family name). In Hungarian the family name precedes the given name(s). It is not necessary to type the whole name, truncation is automatic, e.g. the query term "Con" will find all authors whose name starts with "Con". You are advised to enter the given name as well if the author has a very common surname (e.g. Smith), or if you do not want to have a "noisy" hit set. You may also use wildcards.
Examples for author names: Smith, M., Smith, Janna Malamud, Mac%, Ray%
Query term: Smith, J
Result: Smith, Janna Malamud, Smith, Jennifer S., Smith, John Maynard
Title keywords: words from the titles of articles. Truncation must be indicated at the end of the word. Wildcards may also be used.
Examples for keywords: character, character%, preferences, preferenc%, te*ching , etc.
Query term: influent* content*
Result: influences on nitrate contents, The influence of agrozel type zeolite on the content of macroelements in blackberry leaves, Influencing the organic matter content of potato
Title fragment: a phrase from the title of an article, i.e. words appear together in the given order. Truncation is automatic both in the front and at the end, thus it need not be indicated.
Examples for title fragment: brief introduction, European Union, witness protection
Query term: adenine
Result: benzyladenine, adenine nucleotides, benzyladenine-induced
Wildcards may also be used.
Query term: Hungarian%law
Result: Hungarian tendencies in law enforcement, Notes on Hungarian Anti-Discrimination Law, moral of the Hungarian Status Law saga
Limits
Time: only articles issued in or after the selected year will be retrieved.
Subject: only articles from the periodicals associated with the selected subject will be retrieved.
Periodicial: only articles from the selected periodical will be retrieved.
Only full text articles: only articles with full text links will be retrieved. About 5% of the articles have links to their free full text.
Only articles from EPA (Electronic Periodical Database and Archive): only articles with links to their full text in EPA (Electronic Periodical Database and Archive) will be retrieved.
Various limits may, of course, be used in combination as well.
As a matter of fact, if a journal from the field of engineering is combined with the subject "social sciences", there will be no result.
Using lower and upper case letters does not make a difference.

Periodicals
There are five fields (query lines), but it is possible to use one or more words in each line, which will automatically be connected by AND.
It is possible to use the following relations AND, OR, NOT between the fields (query lines), and it is also possible to determine for each query line which field (author name, title keywords, title fragments) should be searched.
Any query line may be left empty. Search proceeds in the order of query lines, and the temporary hit sets retrieved are limited or broadened on the basis of the term(s) written to the next query line.
It is possible to use truncation and wide cards here as well.

It is also possible to browse among the author names and title keywords in the database, making the selection of the most suitable term from among similar words.
Author names:
Everything that can be found under Simple Search is valid here as well, with the exception of truncation which is not necessary at all.
All names starting with Korb in the author index will be displayed for the query term Korb (e.g. Korbanits András, Korbely Attila, Korbuly Dezső, Korbuly Emese, Korbuly János, Korbuly László, stb.).
Article title:
All words starting with Korsz in the title keyword index will be retrieved by the query term Korsz (e.g. korszak, korszaka, korszakainak, korszakalkotók).
An error message will appear if only one word is entered, or if too many hits would be retrieved by a query term.

Time: only articles issued in or after the selected year will be retrieved.
Using lower and upper case letters does not make a difference.

Browsing
Clicking on the periodical title, the list of volumes and issues, covered by the database, will appear, then you have to select an issue to see its contents.
Periodicals may be displayed in a complete list in alphabetical order, or grouped under their initial letter or subject (following UDC) respectively.
Besides, it is possible to search the alphabetic list of periodical titles by giving the first few characters or words of the periodical title.
You can select articles from the hit list, which was received after the search, in order to request a print list, to save it to file or to order article copies. For this the selected articles have to be added to the cart, by pressing the "Add to shopping cart" button.
If the hit list is too long, it will be displayed on more than one page (on one page a maximum of 50 articles can be displayed). The filling up of the cart is continuous, several searches can follow each other. The contents of the cart can be used to create a print list, save to file or order article copies.
Print list
When pressing the "List" button, the contents of the cart are displayed on the screen, in a format according to the bibliographical references standard.
Save to File
By pressing the "Save to File" button, the contents of the cart can be saved as a file on the requestor's PC.
Order a copy of an article
After selecting the articles and adding them to the cart, you have to click on the button Order article copy. On the next page you can read the terms and conditions for delivery of OSZK, and in a form you have to provide your personal data
name, adress, e-mail, phone number
and also data regarding the conditions of the article copy

You can also add your own remarks in the appropriate field.
Click on Next, and on the next page data of the requestor and the requested articles will be displayed, with the following text shown below:
By ticking the box meaning "I have read and accept the terms and conditions" is equivalent to signing the Order statement to be read here. After ticking the box and clicking on the Submit order button, another page will be displayed, with the following message:
Your order number is: xxxx Your request was successfully sent. Shortly, we will ask you to confirm your order via email.
The promised message will be automatically sent to the given email adress, which asks the requestor to confirm their order by replying to the email. This way we can be sure that it is a deliberate order.
The confirmation email is again sent to matarka@uni-miskolc.hu but this time the Reprography Services of the National Széchényi Library (matarka@oszk.hu) will also receive a copy, and from this point onwards their work starts and the mediation of MATARKA ends.
The prices for the reprography services can be found here:
